Foster City, which began its development as a planned community in the Sixties, was made for recreation. It boasts 19 parks made up of more than 100 acres, including many public tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields (used for many regional tournaments), basketball courts, and a levee along the San Francisco Bay which is a popular spot for runners, cyclists, and families (with grandparents!). Foster City also maintains an extensive 212-acre, man-made enclosed lagoon system, which provide superb water views for the homes and condos dotting the water’s edge. A world-class windsurfing spot in the San Francisco Bay can be found within the city limits of Foster City, as well as a 9-hole golf course.
Foster City’s namesake is due to T. Jack Foster, a real estate magnate who owned much of the land comprising the city and who was instrumental in the intitial design. The land originally was Brewer’s Island and was developed over a twenty year period, and previously was the site of dairy farms and the Leslie Salt Company. Foster City is the proud home of Visa International, The Picture People, and the Dummies book series. To read about the history and creation of Foster City, which is pretty interesting, click here.
In 2008, Foster City was named by Money Magazine as one of the country’s best places to live.
