In 1963, architects Wurster, Bernardi and Emmons approached the former site of the College of San Mateo Junior College on Peninsula Avenue with ambitions beyond simply creating a large-scale residential development. Inspired by their era’s new emphasis on physical fitness and quality of life, the team created Woodlake, a 990-unit, 30-acre apartment complex built around a man-made lakes and spread over about two dozen low rise buildings. Woodlake features several peaceful lakes with ducks and turtles, a huge clubhouse boasting lighted tennis courts, five heated swimming pools, and putting green. Woodlake featured five swimming pools, four tennis courts, paddle ball courts, an 18-hole putting green, two saunas and an on-site fitness center. So committed was Woodlake to the active lifestyle that its 1965 grand opening was attended by several local sports figures.
Kudos were quick in coming. Woodlake soon garnered awards from AIA Homes for Better Living and American Home. Its convenient location – only five minutes by car from downtown Burlingame and downtown San Mateo – and long list of amenities (in addition to those mentioned above, Woodlake also offers a spa, an arts and crafts room, a billiard room and a clubhouse), Woodlake became popular immediately.
Originally all apartments, Woodlake became a “stock cooperative” several years after opening. In 1987, the entire building converted to condominium. Today, Woodlake’s 900 studio, one and two-bedroom condos and 66 two and three-bedroom townhomes operate under the direction of the Woodlake Association.
In the years since it first opening, Woodlake’s cutting-edge perks have become standards for large condominium developments. Woodlake remains popular not only because of this but also because it delivers all of this at reasonable prices. Today, Woodlake condos for sale range in price from the mid-$200s (for studios) to the mid-$400s (for townhouses) and up. One-bedroom units sell in the low $300s, while two-bedroom condo homes can range from the mid-$300s to the low $400s.
Its mixture of location, amenities and value appeals to a wide range of buyers. Woodlake is a favorite for people of all ages, and is also steps from a newly renovated shopping area with a Safeway, CVS, and Starbucks. It is also immediately adjacent to the just renovated athletic facilities of San Mateo High School
